Roof Structure Completion - West Country Elizabethan Manor

Following the large fire at an Elizabethan manor in the West Country, the roof structure, constructed from oak, had suffered catastrophic damage in many sections. Much of the structure was completely destroyed and had fallen into the building below with rest the remaining in place in a very dangerous and damaged state.

Without the roof in place, the building was left open to the elements leaving many of the highly valued finishes and internal structure at risk of further damage. Due to the early appointment of Austin Newport it was possible to quickly erect an all-encompassing specialist scaffold to cover the building, protecting the property and its contents from any further damage and minimising many further costs.

As with all Grade 1 listed buildings it is essential that the historic value of the property is maintained and therefore important that as many of the existing structural members are retained. By working closely with the structural engineer, the painstaking process of deciding which sections of the roof could be strengthened, removed or kept had been this project’s biggest challenge.

This week marked a milestone moment for the project and we are delighted to announce that all aspects of the existing structure have now been made completely safe and stable. The new roof has also been completed to the extent that we are now able to begin stripping the protective scaffolding as we move towards a completely water tight building.

Austin Newport will now progress with the reinstatement of the high quality, handmade internal finishes befitting of this historically valued property.
